Review: Desolation by Travis J. Simmons

JUST RELEASED …….

DESOLATION by Travis Simmons

Asher St Paul thought it was just a typical zombie apocalypse like in the movies, until the necromancers crawled out of the woodwork. Since the undead have chased the living into hiding, the necromancers are able to roam freely in a new America of their making. Asher is seeking safe harbor. The need for safety is what drove him from his home in Philadelphia Pennsylvania before it was shelled. He has searched from quarantine to quarantine, always finding them overrun with zombies until he hears of The Refuge, a military compound in Binghamton New York.

With his family and lover lain to rest by his own hand, he has nothing left to lose and gives everything he has to reach the safe haven. But questions arise when he reaches The Refuge, mainly, how has he been able to sustain multiple zombie bites and not change? He thinks he has found safety in the military compound turned quarantine, but he was wrong. Even now there is a necromancer trying to make The Refuge their kingdom of the dead.

My Review

I have always loved a good zombie story – be it reading or watching. I would have to say Desolation falls into the good zombie story genre. In addition to the zombies there’s a love story brewing. And add to that the necromancers and it makes for an entertaining read.

My knowledge of necromancy and necromancers was very limited – like I heard it in an ICP song when I was much younger. Never knew what it was, never really cared. But I can say that I now understand what a necromancer is. I don’t know that I’d want the ability to control the dead, but it makes for a good twist for a zombie story.

I fell in love with Asher. He was such a real character. I’m not sure how I would react in a zombie apocalypse, and honestly despite my zombie knowledge, I’d probably be a zombie within a few days. Much like Asher – being bit multiple times. However Asher’s apparent immunity to zombies is something that makes him a much better character than I would be. The love “square” that Asher is in is a nice twist to the story. He wants to do what feels right, but I don’t think any of his options are “right” given the circumstances he finds himself in. However it makes for a good story in between the action packed zombie scenes.

I think it was a pretty good story. It was pretty fast-paced and quite entertaining. I liked the characters and the idea of the story was well executed. It was a new take on the old zombie story and I found it to be a nice change of pace.

About the Author

Travis has been writing since he was 14.  He began writing a book called “The Calling of the Two” and while writing that on and off he started uncovering another idea.

“Yes, this is all well and good, but what about before? What happened in the world before these characters came into it?” He always knew there was a “before” and as he started wondering about it he got ideas. At first they were little ideas but as he discovered the names for his characters a whole story about them emerged.

Travis started working on The Revenant Wyrd Saga several years back and he is very happy he did because hearing and documenting Jovian and Angelica’s story has been one wild ride for him.

He lives in a remote part of upstate New York and hoofing around my neck of the woods gives him a ton of inspiration for his novels.

He loves research, and speculating on different ideas and theories.

Review: Into the End by Bonnie R. Paulson

Thanks to Promotional Book Tours for letting me be a part of this tour! Check out the rest of the tour!

About the Book

Rachel Parker in Into the End can IDENTIFY fear, she can DEFINE it, but she doesn’t feel it. Not anymore. Not since the tests.

Her inability to feel fear may be the reason why the rest of America is screaming in terror.

America’s end is near.

No one knows why, but the great country is under attack.

After being weakened by countless natural disasters, America opens its airspace for aid. But instead, what is left of the devastated west coast finds itself nearly obliterated from above. The key may belong to tests designed by a Pacific Northwest psychologist, Rachel Parker.

Rachel loses the love of her life in a house fire as they escape with their children to the nearby Rocky Mountains following the first round of air raids. In refuge, she faces her husband’s best friend, Joshua, but doesn’t want to face his ill-harbored feelings or her own inability to face fear.

Her sister, Brenda, escapes the fallen city, and, mistaken for Rachel, is captured. Terrified and alone, Brenda is protected by the enigmatic Daniel even while he helps keep her captive. Through torture and mind games, Brenda discovers information about her sister’s work that could spin the free world into a tumultuous frenzy where the unknown is safer than reality.

My Review

I like historical romance, but I’ve never actually had the chance to read one from the Civil War. So I was interested to see how this one would play out. I also wanted to see how a quilt could be the focus of a war story. I was pretty happy with it.

Beth is a pretty good character. Like all people she has her strengths and her weaknesses. She wants to be a strong woman – physically and mentally, but in the face of so much death from the war she has to admit her weaknesses. I like when characters have both prominent strengths and weaknesses. It’s refreshing to read about someone that I can connect with as being a “real” person. I liked Joe and Gerta also. They were good characters. But for some reason my favorite character in the book was Jim. Through the whole book I had a feeling that he was a lot smarter than he let on. He just seemed like such a lovable character though. I just really connected with him.

Outside of being a romance the story looks at war from the perspective of a soldier and of a civilian. It’s kind of interesting to see how even though they’re on different sides they still have some of the same reactions to the chaos and destruction going on around them. Beth and Joe have to get through their own personal demons before they can begin to realize what’s going on in their hearts. I liked watching the progression and changes they went through as they spend more time together.

The story was very fast-paced. With all the wounded soldiers and the war itself there was rarely a “down” point in the story. It was pretty much go, go, go from the first word. Even when the chaos would calm down a little there was still everything going on with Joe and Beth and Gerta. Because there was so much going on in the story I read it so quickly. It was almost like I was reading fast because the story was so fast. But even with all the chaos it was still a very enjoyable story. I liked the quilt image on the cover and as Beth worked on the quilt I liked having a visual approximation of what it was going to look like.

Review: Hazardous Material by Kurt Kamm

Thanks to Beck Valley Books for putting this tour together and the author for sending me a copy of his book to review.

About the Book

Bucky Dawson is a HazMat specialist with Los Angeles County Fire Department HazMat Task Force 103. His station is in Lancaster, CA–an area populated with meth labs and outlaw motorcycle gangs, as well as Edwards AFB, NASA, and top-secret aerospace facilities.
Bucky–divorced and lonely–struggles with painkiller addiction. One night Task Force 103 is toned out to support a Sheriff’s raid on a meth lab. Bucky thinks he sees his sister at the door of a double- wide trailer in the Mojave Desert just before it explodes.
Bucky’s life is in chaos. While he searches for answers to his sister’s death, he is drawn into a conflict with the Vagos, who are selling drugs in the Mojave Desert. After a confrontation in which the Vagos nearly kill him, Bucky exacts an unusual revenge that only a HazMat firefighter could accomplish.

The novel twists and turns, bringing together firefighters, a sinister aerospace engineer, the Vagos — led by the Dwarf, their seven foot tall Sergeant at Arms, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in a surprise ending you will not anticipate but you will certainly enjoy.

Review: Modern Suburbia by Chris Merlo

Thanks to the author for sending me a copy of Modern Suburbia to review.

About the Book

Teal County. The populace would say it’s a prime community of modern sophistication and wealth, filled with every form of entertaining consumption one could desire. Expenses were not spared in producing this lavish and clean looking suburb, along with creating an effective and expanded judicial and policing system and a wide and over reaching corporate industry.

But not everyone finds Teal County to be so fantastic. A young man by the name of Nathan Grant, who has a bitter love-hate relationship with the County he was raised in, is heading back after a long absence in hopes of finishing one last job, part of which includes transporting a very valuable item. The crudeness of the County officials had ironically been both the inspiration for his plans, and now was an abrupt interruption to them, as his freedom in the County is cut short just as soon as he arrives. From there, the story’s woven tapestries begins to unravel, and we find foes of Nathan with a set of their own agendas in mind, as well as friends willing to help. With the aid of his friends, Emily, a highly attractive party going drug user, and Aiden, a capable well to do computer genius, among others, Nathan must prevail through the hurdles made by County authorities that stand in his way as he tries to complete a task for Martin Benson, a sleazy corporate high roller. Little does Benson know, Nathan has a few alternative plans of his own for Benson, and little does Nathan know, he might be getting into more hot water than he bargained for. After it is revealed Benson has ties with Falco Dietrich, a German terrorist, along with a handful of his cohorts, and it would also seem the highly effective FBI team of Agent’s Simms and Harris has secretly had an eye on Benson for quite some time, several culminating moments of action and deceptions determine the fates of these characters. All while in the midst of negotiating through the complexities of the modern suburb of Teal County.

But even when cornered, Nathan proves his wide knowledge of the town he grew up in can give him a tricky advantage, and that he may have more than one motive for why he chose to target Benson in his plans.
